Code For Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes is an environmental assessment method for rating and certifying the performance of new homes. It is a national standard for use in the design and construction of new homes with a view to encouraging continuous improvement in sustainable house building.
The Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) has 6 levels. Each level is an increasing reduction of carbon emissions and water usage, for example, Level 1 requires a 10% reduction of the Target Emission Rate (TER) and a maximum of 120 litres of water use per person, Level 3 requires a 25% reduction and a maximum of 105 litres of water per person, and Level 6 requires a better than 100% reduction and is deemed a ‘zero carbon’ structure and a maximum of 80 litres of water per person.
More and more Planning Authorities are adding a requirement to reach certain levels of Code For Sustainable Homes. Many Local Authorities request that Level 3 is obtained, some look for level 4.
